Education is an important sphere of cooperation between Belarus and other countries. Since 2001, in particular, the EU has spent at least € 280 million on various educational programs for Belarus (cooperation with Belarusian universities, scholarships in European universities, etc.)

Political events of the last year have changed the character of educational cooperation. Belarusian authorities are putting increasing pressure on the educational system. Expulsion of students, dismissal of faculty members, and even criminal prosecution of university employees and students have become common practice. In such a situation, various programs which allow Belarusian students to continue

their studies in the EU, and for teachers, and researchers to continue their academic careers have become especially important.

What needs Belarusian scholars have? What do the EU and the US do to support Belarusian scholars? How should the cooperation in the sphere of education between Belarus and other countries be shaped? Should democratic countries cooperate with Belarusian state-owned universities? How should programs of support for Belarusian students, teachers, and researchers look and should look like?

These and other questions will be discussed during the expert discussion organized by the Office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
