Iran is witnessing its deadliest wave of anti-government protests in years, as the death toll has crossed 500, according to a US-based human rights group. HRANA reports that 490 protesters and 48 security personnel have been killed during two weeks of nationwide demonstrations, while more than 10,000 people have been arrested. Iranian authorities have yet to release any official figures.
The unrest has become the biggest internal challenge to Iran’s leadership in recent history, significantly weakening the government, even as analysts say a complete collapse of the system remains unlikely. Streets across major cities remain tense amid reports of a heavy security crackdown, internet blackouts, and mass detentions.
As tensions rise, US President Donald Trump says he is weighing “strong options”, including possible military action, while also signaling support for Iranian protesters. Trump has also announced plans to speak with Elon Musk about restoring internet access in Iran through Starlink, after authorities shut down services for several days.
Iran has responded with stern warnings, threatening retaliation against Israel and US military bases in the region if any attack is launched. Israel has been placed on high alert, amid fears of a potential US intervention linked to the ongoing unrest.
Meanwhile, global demonstrations continue in support of Iranian protesters. Iranian women rallied in London, while Turkish police blocked a similar protest in Istanbul. In the United States, a rally in Los Angeles supporting Iran’s protest movement was disrupted when a truck drove into the crowd.
