Elephant Seals!

Point Reyes has been a famous place among Elephant Seal enthusiasts since the first breeding pair showed up in 1981 after being hunted to near extinction.

We rolled in to Drakes Bay after a few days of sailing from Cresent City; with an impending blow forecasted we bailed on exploring until the weather looked more favourable.

Cut to a couple weeks chillin the Bay Area and we're ready to go look for some Elephant Seals! We counted 25 juveniles and 40 females with 1-2 bulls patrolling and drumming around Drakes Bay. This time of year the females are gestating before giving birth over the winter, and the weanlings looked to be playing and practicing their swimming. To be honest I was a little surprised to see weanlings on shore in late September: I always thought pups were born over the winter and headed to the open ocean until moulting next year. Most of my understanding of Northern Elephant Seals comes from much further North, so the Point Reyes seals could be on a different schedule.
