At Flinders University in Australia, Professor Howard Fallowfield, from the College of Science and Engineering, is leading innovative research on nature-based systems to treat wastewater in rural and remote communities.

These systems, known as High Rate Algal Ponds, use shallow raceways stirred by a simple paddle wheel, often powered by solar energy, to efficiently and sustainably purify wastewater.

Within the Australian Research Council Centre for Biofilm Research and Innovation, Professor Fallowfield’s team is working to reduce construction costs, shorten treatment times, and increase the amount of water available for irrigation in water-stressed regions.

This research is carried out in close collaboration with the Nantes Université in France, where both teams are developing new operational control strategies and training the next generation of experts in sustainable, nature-based wastewater treatment.
