VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:

Dr. Lalitaa Suglani (LS): But, if it's also not picked up do you find that people can mask it or find unhealthy coping strategies to help them manage it throughout their life so even as an adult, they may not notice that they have ADHD because they found coping strategies to help them remember things or to help them manage their anxiety.

Dr Shyamal Mashru (SM): Yes, absolutely and this is with his concept of high functioning ADHD comes about. So, I've had clients who on that sort of outward appearance of it have done educationally well, gone on to get good jobs, but there's one common theme they described throughout this which is basically burnout.

(SM): So, they'll say I've had to work or study much harder than my peers to achieve the same thing. Then I went on to work and I'm having to work so much harder than everyone else to achieve the same result. Or I'm putting in a lot of work after hours when everyone else has gone home or working at home nowadays because I've not been able to be productive enough during the day. Over time that can really lead to burn out and we see that a lot where people actually take time off work, off sick and one common thing that they will also describe is even though outwardly I've done well, I don't feel I've met my potential.

(LS): Is that Imposter syndrome within.

(SM): Yes. So, in education they don’t feel they have met their potential and also in their career they don't feel they have met their potential. It's a common myth right that, oh well if you've done academically well, you've done well in your career you can’t have ADHD, that’s absolutely not true.
