A fire swept through a New Delhi shantytown on Friday morning, sending huge plumes of black smoke rising over the Indian capital.
Twenty fire trucks, with a total of 70 firefighters, were still battling to put the flames out a few hours after the fire was reported, but the fire department chief said the blaze was no longer in danger of spreading.
No deaths or injuries have been reported yet, according to Devesh C Srivastva, a police official in the scene.
"The operation is still on to douse the fire completely. As far as the reason for this fire is concerned it's too early to say," he added.
The fire is next to a row of three hospitals in New Delhi, the historical part of the Indian capital, but a brick wall separating the two areas has kept the hospitals safe, the fire department chief said.
The black smoke was coming from burning materials including plastic tarps and bottles, tires and scraps of wood that had been collected by the shantytown's thousands of residents who work collecting garbage for resale.
Nasima Khatum , a widow with two young children, was working as a scrap dealer and was living at the edge of the settlement.
While her children were away when the fire broke out , her house was gutted and belongings destroyed.
"I have two young kids who were not here when our house suddenly caught fire. Our house was at the edge of the settlement so we could not see the fire, we used to sit here and eat and also used to sleep here. We are very poor," Khatum said.
Another fire a day earlier in the nation's financial centre of Mumbai gutted state government offices and killed three people before authorities could put it out.
