The South Island of New Zealand is blessed with many beautiful snow-fed lakes , some being natural others the result of, or modified, during the creation of a number of significant hydro-electric schemes constructed mainly in the 1950's and 60's.

This video provides a glance at three of these, Lake Ohau, Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo with Pukaki and Tekapo part of the broader Benmore power scheme.

Lake Ohau is the smaller of these lakes and in October 2020 a fire ripped though the small village settlement there destroying 48 homes and decimating 5500ha of farm and conservation land (news paper article https://www.stuff.co.nz/timaru-herald...)

Our highest mountain Aoraki / Mt Cook (3724m - 12,218 ft) is at the western end of Lake Pukaki , with all three lakes having spectacular mountain backdrops.

At 1,029m high, Mt John (adjacent to Lake Tekapo) offers unrivalled 360-degree views across the largest accredited International Dark Sky Reserve in the world.
Lake Tekapo is also home to the infamous Tekapo Lupins a garden escapee which has found the shores and rivers in the area to its liking, not a favourite with river conservationists but loved by tourists and flowering generally around late November.
