Histamine is an organic nitrogenous compound involved in local immune responses, as well as regulating physiological function in the gut and acting as a neurotransmitter for the brain, spinal cord, and uterus. Histamine is involved in the inflammatory response and has a central role as a mediator of itching.

Histamine is an organic compound involved in local immune responses, regulating physiological functions in the gut, and acting as a neurotransmitter. It is derived from the amino acid histidine and is stored in the granules of mast cells and basophils, two types of white blood cells. When the body encounters an allergen or an injury, these cells release histamine, which then binds to histamine receptors on various tissues. This binding causes a range of effects, including vasodilation, increased permeability of blood vessels, and contraction of smooth muscles. These reactions contribute to common allergy symptoms such as itching, swelling, redness, and bronchoconstriction. Histamine also plays a role in the secretion of gastric acid in the stomach and acts within the central nervous system to regulate the sleep-wake cycle.
