“My responsibility is to educate people as a doctor about the dangers of all things nuclear,” declares Dr. Helen Caldicott in this Enviro Close-Up. She tells of how at 17 she read Nevil Shute’s book On the Beach, about the aftermath of a nuclear war, and that started her on the road to becoming a global leader in challenging nuclear war and nuclear power. An early achievement, in the early 1970s, was convincing her native country, Australia, to sue France over its atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons in the Pacific, which brought that to an end. And she was a force in Australia in educating unions there about the medical dangers of uranium mining. Then, in the United States, she revived the organization Physicians for Social Responsibility and served as its first president. And she has written a series of important books including Nuclear Madness: What We Can Do and given presentations all over the world. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the beginning of 2025 moved its “Doomsday Clock” to 89 seconds to midnight—the closest it has ever been to midnight which it defines as “nuclear apocalypse”—and Dr. Caldicott says: “It should be 5 seconds.” Dr. Caldicott explains that “I practice global preventive medicine” with her model the words of President Thomas Jefferson that: “An informed democracy will behave in a responsible fashion.” As to the claim that nuclear power is "needed," she says bluntly, "That's crap," and speaks of nuclear power as "a carcinogenic industry."
