The Douglas DC-4, also known as the C-54 Skymaster in its military variant, is a four-engine propeller-driven aircraft that was developed by Douglas Aircraft Company. It was introduced in 1942 and served as a workhorse during and after World War II. The DC-4/C-54 was an enlarged version of the successful DC-3/C-47 aircraft.

The DC-4/C-54 features a low-wing design and a spacious fuselage, allowing for greater cargo capacity and passenger accommodations compared to its predecessor. It has a longer range and increased speed, making it suitable for long-haul flights. The aircraft is powered by four Pratt & Whitney R-2000 Twin Wasp radial engines, each generating around 1,450 horsepower.
In terms of capacity, the DC-4/C-54 can carry up to 86 passengers in a high-density seating configuration or accommodate around 40 passengers in a more comfortable arrangement. It can also be used as a cargo aircraft, with the capability to transport significant amounts of freight.
During World War II, the military variant of the DC-4, the C-54 Skymaster, played a vital role in various operations, including transportation of troops, cargo, and wounded personnel. It was particularly instrumental in the Berlin Airlift, where it helped deliver essential supplies to the isolated city of Berlin during the Soviet blockade in 1948-1949.

Post-war, the DC-4 found extensive commercial use in both passenger and cargo operations. Many airlines operated the DC-4 on transatlantic routes, helping to establish intercontinental air travel. The aircraft was praised for its reliability, range, and versatility.
While the DC-4/C-54 is no longer in widespread commercial use, some examples still exist today and are utilized for special purposes such as airfreight, firefighting, or as historical aircraft in museums. Its legacy as a dependable and influential aircraft in aviation history remains significant.
