The NFL is distancing itself from Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, clarifying that "his views are not those of the NFL as an organization."

Butker, who delivered a commencement speech at Benedictine College, a private Catholic liberal arts school in Kansas, remarked that most of the women receiving degrees were likely more excited about getting married and having children. He also criticized some Catholic leaders for promoting "dangerous gender ideologies" to American youth.

"Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity," said Jonathan Beane, NFL senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, in a statement released Thursday. "His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger."

The three-time Super Bowl champion's 20-minute address on Saturday at the school in Atchison, Kansas, received a standing ovation from graduates and attendees. During his speech, Butker, known for his conservative Catholic beliefs, also criticized Pride month and President Joe Biden's stance on abortion.

"I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you," Butker said. "Some of you may go on to lead successful careers, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. My beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and mother," he added, emphasizing the importance of the title "homemaker."

Butker also criticized an Associated Press article for portraying the Catholic Church's shift towards conservatism in a negative light. He referenced Pride month as "a deadly sin sort of pride that has a month dedicated to it" and denounced Biden’s policies, particularly his response to the Supreme Court's reversal of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

A 2017 seventh-round pick out of Georgia Tech, Butker has established himself as one of the NFL’s best kickers, breaking the Chiefs’ franchise record with a 62-yard field goal in 2022. He played a crucial role in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victories in 2020 and 2023, including kicking the field goal that forced overtime in their win over San Francisco in February.
