Cumbria steam locomotive at Embsay station on the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway

Описание к видео Cumbria steam locomotive at Embsay station on the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway

"This video shows the ""Cumbria"" steam locomotive at Embsay station on the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway.
Formed as recently as 1979, this heritage railway is just outside Skipton on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Currently, only four miles long, a long term ambition is to extend the line from Skipton.
The steam loco we are videoing today is called “Cumbria”. Built to a wartime “Austerity” design by the Hunslet Engine Co. of Leeds in 1953. It carries works number 3794.
The locomotive was first delivered as WD 194 to the Longmoor Army Stores Depot in southern England as part of the Strategic War Reserve, but despite being brand new, it was immediately put into store! The engine was then transferred to Bicester in Oxfordshire where it was put into traffic in 1958 and did 10 years of service, and was completely overhauled before being stored again!
The engine was transferred to the Weapons Testing Depot at Shoeburyness but only steamed once every 12 weeks. After a quiet career with the Army, it was bought by the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway in 1973. It arrived at Haverthwaite still in khaki Army livery and number 94. In 1974, the engine was painted maroon and named “Cumbria” by the Chairman of the then newly formed Cumbria County Council.
Our video shows Cumbria bringing a train into Embsay from Bolton Abbey and then performing carriage shunting duties at Embsay station.
Weighing around 48 tons makes it ideal for handling heritage carriages.
