In the mountains you get a sense of deep time.
Half Dome is an entry point into deep time.
glaciers did carving
and evaporation exposed the land,
leaving the valley floor

in parallel motions we get a sense of
moving over the terrain
the trees and plants wait patiently for rain
knowing the ecology believes in them.

You've got to hang on or you'll fall off.
The plant life keeps itself close to the mountain.

These huge and mighty forms that do not live
but through the magic of time imagination,
they are rising and are moving through my mind.

and the recent past, our parents and grand parents
their generation,
and before that it is history
and before that it is prehistory,

I have to try and use my imagination
to wrap my mind around 450 million years
I like the one where you think about it as the distance

and the time of humans is
just a little bit of the top dirt under the fingernail.

Another analogy for 450 million years is
the year.
In that scenario the Sierras started in January 1
and on 11:57 at the end of the year,
humans started coming along.
