A hearing into the senate inquiry into Senator McKenzie’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Regional Forest Agreements) Bill 2020 was held today.

Senator McKenzie’s Private Senator’s Bill seeks to amend the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) and the Regional Forest Agreements Act 2002, to clarify that forestry operations covered by a Regional Forest Agreement are exempted from Part 3 of the EPBC Act.

A Federal Court ruling in May created ambiguity with respect to the provision of the EPBC Act this Bill seeks to amend and give certainty to an industry that employs nearly 200,000 people employed and that generates a turnover around $24 billion annually.
