I would like to share with you the movie I was working on throughout this year. It is a 6-episodes record of my adventures in Sri Lanka, where I spent 1,5 month in the summer of 2017. It was the AIESEC travel project "Explore Sri Lanka", organized by students from the Colombo University, partly sponsored by Nikon Sri Lanka. In a group of about 30 volunteers from all around the world, we travelled around the entire island and discovered the rich Sri Lankan culture.
We took part in various activities, e.g. rafting, we visited an elephant orphanage, a precious stone mine. We took part in local Buddhist festivals, we climbed the mountains, swam in the Indian Ocean between coral reefs, and we wandered through rainforests and jungles. At the same time, we documented our adventures by taking photos and videos which would promote Sri lankan tourism.
I made friends with people from Sri Lanka, Poland, Italy, Spain, Hong Kong, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Russia, Hungary, Greece, Slovakia and many other countries.
While traveling through Sri Lanka, we lived in simple conditions, sometimes with limited access to running water and ubiquitous insects. Every day I overcame my weaknesses and limits: high temperatures, 90% air humidity, lots of kilometers traveled per day, expanding the range of tastes and smells known to me so far, and overcoming a 40-degree fever, while riding a tuk tuk on the mountain tea fields to the nearest village in search of a doctor. I have experienced an incredibly different fauna and flora, and for the first time ever I had a close encounter with young sharks and two-day turtles. I experienced luxurious customer service on an Emirates plane, as well as a crowded train in Sri Lanka with passengers hanging on the outside door for 4 hours.
Moreover, I got to explore a very diverse spiritual side of Sri Lanka, seeing 4 religions on one street : a Buddhist temple, a Mosque, a Church and a Hindu temple.
I was captivated by conversations with local people, e.g. with an elderly fisherman who has been creating his own nets for 40 years, or with a carpets seller in the Muslim district, with a fruit seller at the market, with mothers, grandmothers, children and their teachers in primary schools.
At the end of the project, we organized a photo exhibition in Colombo, illustrating Sri Lanka in our eyes. Right after my return, I made a short movie called „Colors of Sri Lanka”. Link: • Colours of Sri Lanka . Today I treat it only as a sneak peak.
I have decided to create a complete documentation of my adventures to fully share with you what I saw and experienced during my stay in Sri Lanka. The film consists of shots captured with a mobile phone, two dSLRs (Canon & Nikon), a Sony camera and a Gopro.
In 2020, in this difficult time affected by the pandemic, editing the movie made me travel in time and space.
I hope that it will inspire at least one person to go out of their comfort zone, depart on a journey and visit this beautiful country.
Thank you Sarma for organizing this project and all the people with whom I share these fantastic memories.
