In this intuitive abstract painting demo, I’m working with a fun art prompt that’s all about shaping the chaos with a little structure by using patterns. I’m keeping things fast and loose—this is a 15-minute painting challenge using a limited palette of three colors, plus black and white. The goal is to create a spontaneous, expressive abstract painting and then introduce a repeated pattern somewhere in the composition.

I love how intuitive abstract painting gives me space to explore without overthinking. I start with gestural mark-making using a black Sharpie gel pen—it’s my favorite way to break the blank page—and then layer in color, texture, and just a bit of charcoal for contrast. I’m using light olive green, burnt sienna, and light blue permanent. The palette feels grounded but still leaves room for contrast and mood.

The beauty of this prompt is how the pattern shows up—sometimes it’s stamped, sometimes scratched in, sometimes collaged. It doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, I think repeated elements shine more when they’re a little rough around the edges. Patterns add rhythm. They give the eye something to land on. And in a fast, intuitive abstract painting, they help pull everything together.

This painting tutorial is part of my ongoing exploration into intuitive techniques, using quick art prompts to spark creativity and stay connected to process over perfection.
