Antoinette Badenhorst from TeachinArt online school of art, shows a typical example of clay drying too quickly. In this case, the piece was covered between two Hardy boards, both of which are quite absorbent. One side was exposed to more air, resulting in the rim of the piece drying significantly faster than its interior. As the rim began to dry and shrink, it experienced tension since the rest of the clay had not yet contracted, similar to clothing that is too tight for the body. This uneven shrinking can cause the clay to tear over time, and you may notice a color change on the dried areas. While the middle remains pliable enough to dent with a finger, the outer edge is much firmer due to accelerated drying.
