Scuffles broke out between police and Israeli settlers attending the trial of two of twenty-four Palestinians arrested following the lynching of two Israeli reservists in Ramallah in October.

Two hundred metres away from the spot where two Palestinians were to go before a military court charged with murdering the reservists, Jewish settlers from the West Bank settlement of Beit El gathered on Monday to demonstrate and build barricades.

When Israeli army and police arrived to restrain them fighting broke out.

"Do you see all these soldiers and policemen, do you see them. Sharon, instead of making them fight against Jews and settlers, bring them to fight the Arabs in Ramallah so that the Arabs will stop shooting and killing us."

Down the road at the military court near Ayush junction the accused sat handcuffed in the dock of the court for the hearing.

One cried as relatives attending the trial shouted their innocence in Arabic.

Meanwhile, outside the court, a group of right wing Jewish extremists gathered to demand the death sentence for the accused.
