What Happened to the Highlander Saga?

There can be only one… or so they say. Russell Mulcahy’s Highlander was an unusual success story. A box office flop in the US when initially released in 1986, the film became an unlikely smash hit on VHS, and was a blockbuster in Europe. As such, it spawned an unlikely franchise, but to many of us, the sequels were disastrous. Mulcahy himself returned for Highlander II: The Quickening, along with stars Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, but the film was a tortured production that messed with the mythology established by the first film. Yet, it made money. Go figure. The second sequel, Highlander III: The Sorcerer (or as it’s known in the US: Highlander III: The Final Dimension) was a much lower-budget effort with lost Mulcahy and Connery, but kept Lambert for his last solo effort as Connor McLeod.
