You'll learn basic painting tips and techniques that will have you painting a realistic still life painting showing an assortment of literature standing upright on a shelf with the focus being on the open book with pages forming the shape of a heart. Holding the books up is a ceramic style cup filled with your favorite paint brushes acting as a bookend. The titles and genre of the books is left up to your imagination. Make it personal, or send a message with the words or names you choose to write on the binders. With the three-dimensional illusion created by the composition, it will appear realistic and look like the pages are jumping off of your canvas (pun intended...lol). This creation will not only bring you joy to look at, but you will also learn some valuable painting techniques along the way. This painting lesson will teach you how to create realistic looking dimension with properly placed highlights and shadows. It will provide you with a firm learning experience and maybe your own personal artistic story line will emerge along the way. Canvas: 16x20 stretched primed canvas Brushes: 1/2 inch flat bristle (large), 1/4 inch flat synthetic brush (medium), #1 round (small)
Acrylic Paint: titanium white, mars black, deep yellow, burnt umber (brown), green oxide, fire red, cobalt blue, burnt sienna (rust)
Other: #2 pencil, palette, cup of water for washing brushes, paper towel for drying brushes

STEPS:
1. 1/2 inch bristle brush – Paint the wall with black
2. 1/2 inch bristle brush – Paint the surface with brown, rust and yellow
3. chalk – Draw outline for open book
4. chalk – Draw outline for upright books and cup
5. 1/4 inch flat brush – Paint base coat for open book with brown
6. 1/4 inch flat brush – Paint base coat for upright books and cup with black, brown, rust, yellow, white, green, red and blue
7. #1 round brush - Paint base coat for paint brushes with black and white
8. 1/4 inch flat brush – Paint highlights and shadow on upright books and cup with black, white and book colors used in step #6
9. 1/4 inch flat brush – Finish open book with red, yellow, white, brown and black
10. #1 round brush – Finish brushes with black, brown, yellow, rust, red, peach and white
11. 1/4 inch flat brush – Paint shadows on surface with black and brown
12. #1 round brush – Paint decorative elements and words on book binders with black, white, brown, yellow, blue, green and red
13. #1 round brush – Sign with black
