Cost of Incarceration: It costs approximately $132,860 per year to incarcerate one person in California (2024-25 estimates). In contrast, tuition and fees for a year at an Ivy League school like Harvard or Yale average around $60,000 - $65,000.

Racial Disparities: Black Americans make up only 5% of California’s total population but represent 28% of the prison population.

The Three Strikes Law: In California, over 40% of those serving life sentences under the "Three Strikes" law are Black.
