On September 12, 2023 the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) presented part one of "What Counts: MacArthur Fellows Reflect on Academic Reward Structures.” The event was part of a two-panel series examining promotion and tenure structures for humanities and interpretive social sciences faculty in higher education today. The series is supported by an X-Grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s MacArthur Fellows Program.

The panel, moderated by ACLS President Joy Connolly, featured:

• Natalia Molina, Distinguished Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity and Dean's Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity, University of Southern California; 2020 MacArthur Foundation Fellow
• Dimitri Nakassis, Professor of Classics, University of Colorado Boulder; 2015 MacArthur Foundation Fellow
