Описание к видео 🎵 The Gregorian Calendar - Rome, 1582 (History Song)

In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar. The reform corrected the Julian calendar, which had drifted by 10 days since the Council of Nicaea in 325. The change was designed to keep Easter close to the spring equinox.

The reform, developed by Aloysius Lilius and refined by Christopher Clavius, ordered that in Catholic countries the day after Thursday 4 October 1582 became Friday 15 October 1582. This removed 10 calendar days and introduced a new leap year rule.

Catholic states such as Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Poland adopted the change immediately. Protestant states resisted for more than a century, while Britain and its colonies adopted it only in 1752. Orthodox states continued to use the Julian calendar for even longer.

The reform caused confusion in trade and diplomacy but gradually became accepted. Today the Gregorian calendar is the international civil standard, while some churches still use the Julian system for religious purposes.
