Part One of the book, The Dysfunctioning of the West, focused on how, in the 17th century, the West irrevocably split in such a way that it cannot solve the moral problems it faces. In the first five lectures in this series, we examined the implications of that analysis. As we look towards the writing of Part Two, we turn to the methodology that will be used in Part Two. That methodology, though rooted in Heidegger, requires a somewhat different approach. In this lecture, we begin the process of building that phenomenology.
This lecture begins to lay the foundation for a new phenomenology, a kind of post-Heideggerian methodology that is nonetheless "true" to Heidegger's work. In this lecture, we will begin to establish the core concepts which will frame the work we will do in subsequent lectures. New to this lecture are concepts like in-between-ness, neither-ness, and intimacy.
