DPP Taipei City Councilor Hsu Chia-pei passed away in the early hours of Wednesday at the age of 48 due to endometrial cancer. Fellow party councilor Chien Shu-pei was visibly emotional at the news. Council Speaker Dai Hsi-chin said the council would fully handle related matters following her passing. When discussing the loss of a key figure in the Songshan and Xinyi districts, he emphasized that other councilors from the same constituency would take on the responsibility and strive to serve their constituents.

On the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, Hsu Chia-pei posted on Facebook to wish everyone a happy holiday, even expressing hopes for everyone’s safety and health. Just under 24 hours later, the news of her passing shocked many.

At the beginning of the year, Hsu Chia-pei noticed she was feeling unwell and went for an examination. It revealed that she had endometrial cancer. It is with great sadness that we report she left us early this morning due to multiple organ failure after falling into a coma.

Hsu was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in May of this year and underwent aggressive chemotherapy. Her condition initially improved, and she experienced stable health. However, last week her condition worsened, leading to a coma and ultimately multiple organ failure. She passed away in the early hours of Wednesday.

She was known for her kindness, serious approach to inquiries, and outstanding service. She left a positive first impression on her constituents. Even representatives from different political parties spoke highly of her.

Whether it was her inquiries in the council or her local community service, she was incredibly dedicated and active at the grassroots level. The news of her sudden passing is something that many people find hard to accept.

Hsu first ran for election in 2010 but was unsuccessful. In 2014, she was elected with the second-highest number of votes and subsequently won reelection twice, serving three terms as a councilor. She strongly advocated for policies related to youth migration, elderly care, and urban renewal.

Endometrial cancer often presents initially with abnormal bleeding, so many cases are detected early. However, some women may mistakenly believe that postmenopausal bleeding is just the shedding of the endometrium and might not take it seriously.

Doctors stress that endometrial cancer can easily be mistaken for regular menstrual pain. They urge that if any unusual symptoms arise, it’s best to seek medical attention to avoid missing the crucial window for treatment.
