Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions occur when certain gases trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere, leading to global warming. While some emissions occur naturally, human activity since the Industrial Revolution has significantly increased their concentration. 
Primary Human Causes
• Burning Fossil Fuels: This is the leading cause of emissions. When coal, oil, and natural gas are burned for electricity, manufacturing, and heat, they release massive amounts of carbon dioxide (CO_2). 
• Transportation: Cars, trucks, ships, and planes primarily run on petroleum-based fuels. This sector is a major contributor to CO_2 and nitrogen oxides. 
• Deforestation: Trees act as "carbon sinks" by absorbing CO_2. When forests are cleared or burned for agriculture or development, that stored carbon is released back into the air, and the planet loses its natural air filters. 
• Agriculture: Livestock like cows produce methane (CH_4) during digestion. Additionally, the use of synthetic fertilizers releases nitrous oxide (N_2O), which is much more potent at trapping heat than CO_2. • Industrial Processes: Beyond energy use, the chemical reactions involved in producing cement, steel, and plastics release significant greenhouse gases.
