നൊച്ചൻ , നച്ചൻ, നൊച്ചെലി ,നച്ചെലി, നച്ചക്കൻ എന്നൊക്കെ പേരുള്ള
നച്ചെലി എലിയല്ല എന്ന് മാത്രമല്ല എലി വർഗവുമായി ഒരു ബന്ധവും ഇല്ലാത വേറെ ജീവിയാണ്. നെല്ലും മറ്റു ധാന്യങ്ങളും തിന്ന് നശിപ്പിക്കുന്നവരെന്ന് കരുതുകയും നമ്മൾ തെറ്റായി എലി എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് തല്ലികൊല്ലുകയും ചെയ്യാറുള്ള ഒരു പ്രാണി പിടിയൻ ജീവിയാണ്. ഷ്റൂ എന്നാണ് ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പേര്. പണ്ടാരോ അതിന് നൊച്ചെലി എന്ന് മലയാളത്തിൽ പേരിട്ടതിനാൽ പലരും ഇതും ഒരിനം എലിയാവും എന്നാണ് കരുതുന്നത്. അല്ലേയല്ല. പ്രാണികൾ , ഞാഞ്ഞൂൽ , സിസിലിയന്മാർ, വണ്ടുകൾ , പാറ്റകൾ ഒക്കെയാണ് ഭക്ഷണം. അവയുടെ പുറം കവചം കടിച്ച് നുറുക്കാൻ പറ്റുന്ന പല്ലുകളുണ്ട്. സത്യത്തിൽ ഇവർ നമ്മുടെ വീട്ടിൽ കയറിയാൽ പാറ്റ കൂറകളെ ഒക്കെ തിന്ന് വൃത്തിയാക്കി തരുന്ന ഉപകാരികളാണ്. ( മഹാ നാറ്റക്കാരാണ് എന്നത് ഞാൻ മിണ്ടാത്തതാ ) കണ്ടയുടൻ എലി എന്ന് കൂവി തല്ലി കൊല്ലേണ്ട കാര്യമൊന്നും ഇല്ല . Etruscan shrew (Suncus etruscus ) എന്ന വെള്ള പല്ലൻ പിഗ്മി ഷ്റൂ ആയേക്കാം എന്നാണ് പറഞ്ഞത്. ഇന്ന് ലോകത്ത് ജീവിക്കുന്നതിൽ ഏറ്റവും ഭാരം കുറഞ്ഞ സസ്തനി ആണ്. 1.8 ഗ്രാം ഒക്കെ മാത്രമേ ഭാരം ഉണ്ടാവുകയുള്ളു. തന്നേക്കാൾ വലിയ ചുണ്ടെലികളെ വാലിൽ കടിച്ച് ചുഴറ്റിയടിച്ച് കൊന്ന് തിന്നും . വിശപ്പിൻ്റെ ഉസ്താദ്മാരാണ്. തന്നേക്കാൾ അധികം തീറ്റ വേണം. മണിക്കൂറ് വെച്ച് ദഹിച്ചും തീരും. പട്ടിണി ഒട്ടും പറ്റില്ല. ഉടൻ ചത്തുപോകും. ചെവി തുരക്കുന്ന ശബ്ദമുണ്ടാക്കും. വൃത്തികെട്ട മണം ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥികൾ ശരീരത്തിൻ്റെ അരികിൽ ഉണ്ട്. അതിനാൽ പൂച്ച പോലും തിന്നില്ല.
രസമുള്ള ഒരു കാര്യം അമ്മ ഷ്റൂ കുട്ടികളുമായി സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നതാണ്. കൂട് നഷ്ടമായാൽ , ഒളിച്ച് കഴിയുന്ന ഇടത്ത് അലോസരമായാൽ പിള്ളേരുമായി ഒരു പോക്കുണ്ട്. മണ്ണിനടിയിലും ഇരുളിലും കഴിയുന്നതിനാൽ ഇവരുടെ കാഴ്ച ശക്തി പരിമിതമാണ് - മൂക്കാണ് കണ്ണ് എന്ന് പറയാം. മണമാണ് വഴി. അമ്മയുടെ വാല് തുടങ്ങുന്ന ഇടത്ത് കുഞ്ഞ് കടിച്ച് പിടിക്കും - അതിന് പിറകിൽ വേറൊരു കുഞ്ഞ് എന്ന വിധം - എന്നിട്ട് ഒരു ട്രെയിൻ ബോഗികൾ ഓഫ് റോഡിലൂടെ പോകും പോലെ - കാരവൻ പോകും പോലെ ഒരു പോക്കാണ്. നല്ല വേഗതയിൽ വളഞ്ഞും പുളഞ്ഞും അമ്മ ഓടുന്നതിനൊപ്പം പിറകിലെ ബോഗികളും
