On 23 December 2025, the U.S. nuclear-powered submarine USS Greeneville arrived at Busan port in South Korea. Officially, it was stated that the submarine came only to take supplies and give rest to the soldiers on board. However, when a U.S. nuclear submarine visits a sensitive region like the Korean Peninsula, the matter is never that simple.
This visit is especially significant because it is the first entry of a U.S. nuclear submarine after South Korea’s new president came to power. In reality, this move sends a clear message from the United States that South Korea’s security is a serious priority for Washington.
A submarine like USS Greeneville is extremely powerful and capable of carrying out long-range attacks if required. The United States and South Korea see this visit as part of their military partnership and joint preparedness, but North Korea reacted strongly, calling it a provocation and claiming it would increase tensions in the region.
