Buddha on Organized Religion

Why did the Buddha's teachings become an organized religion? Was it a good thing that they did? I'll consider what an organized religion is, some of its drawbacks and benefits, and then turn to an account from the early suttas of what the Buddha had to say about the development of his dharma.
