Evolution can sometimes produce Darwinian games of rock-paper-scissors. Biologists call these rock-paper-scissors games non-transitive fitness interactions. Non-transitive fitness arises when there are multiple varieties within a population and no single variety has the highest fitness. In this video we explain non-transitive fitness and we discuss an example recently discovered in our lab involving iron acquisition in budding yeasts.
