China's latest nuclear safety issue
has attracted international attention.
The China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group
announced that they will open for tourists
the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station.
Recently, Hong Kong media revealed how tourists
can enter the nuclear station for only RMB100-200,
and even come 500 meters close to nuclear reactors.
Critics say this incident reveals lack of security.

According to Apple Daily (Hong Kong) reporters,
a person called "Shezai" is touting outside Daya Bay
and taking tourists into the station for RMB100-200.

An Apple Daily reporter followed a male "guide"
with a permit into the nuclear station. This man
represented himself as a nuclear station worker

and even had permit in his car.
Security allowed cars with permits to enter,
without questions or safety inspection.

The reporter said that a terrorist carrying a bomb
or heavy weapons, like mortars, can easily enter
the nuclear station by stealing a car with a permit.

After arriving at the viewing platform 500 meters
from the two nuclear reactors, the male "guide"
warned the reporter that if they get caught,
he could lose his permit and job.
"You and I might be put in jail".
But the half hour tour went on without a challenge.

According to Apple Daily, Hong Kong Legislative
Council member, Tu Jinshen, said that the tour
reveals Daya Bay's lack of security. Another member,
He Xiulan, pointed out that a nuclear station
with raw material for nuclear weapons
could easily become a terrorist target.

After Japan's nuclear leak, to pacify the public,
the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station,
which is very close to Hong Kong,
was opened to tourists.

Will these tours really relieve public tension about
nuclear leaks? Military commentator Zhao Hong,
told Apple Daily, if terrorists get into the station,
they could trigger bombs in their cars
or fire at the station from a distance.

Daya Bay Station's bad history of hiding incidents
has damaged its credibility. Director of Greenpeace,
Zhang Jieyin, believes this "tour" is just for show
and has nothing to do with pacifying the public.

Previously, Hong Kong media revealed
Daya Bay Station's control rod failure in 2008,
but the station concealed it for over 2 years.

According to Frankfurter Allgemeine,
27 of the world's 65 nuclear reactors
under construction are in China.
Daya Bay Station had two nuclear leaks not long ago.

Germany's Mirror Weekly reported on March 17,
that many of China's nuclear facilities
are in earthquake-prone areas, but "the official
propaganda's focus is on calming people down."

The report said, talk about nuclear reactors' safety,
emergency plans, and where and how to store fuel
"is considered a political hot potato, a state secret."

Although China's Premier, Wen Jiabao, declared
that new nuclear power projects will be suspended,
a large-scale nuclear power industry exhibition
will be held in Shenzhen City on April 6.
This exhibition reveals that authorities
do not intend to suspend nuclear development.
