Your OSHA 300 logs tell you what happened, but they don’t always tell you why it did. That’s where we really need to dig in if we want to prevent future accidents.

Once you’ve identified trends in your recordable data, the next step is to translate that information into prevention strategies:

Drill down, don’t just look back. If slips and trips are common, review environmental factors (lighting, flooring, layout), not just incident reports.

Layer in context. Compare your internal data with leading indicators like near-miss reports, employee observations, and training participation rates. This helps you spot risks before they lead to recordables.

Visualize your findings. Turning data into dashboards or heat maps makes it easier to communicate risks across departments and empower teams to act.

Close the loop. Every data review should lead to a conversation with supervisors, workers, and leadership about what’s changing and why.

If you use this data like a strategic roadmap, it will help your organization move from tracking injuries to actually preventing them.
