It's safe to say that Manchester's sporting heritage is vast, and where better to celebrate that than at Sportcity! Sportcity was originally envisaged as the Olympic Park for the failed bids to host the 1996 and 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It was instead built to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games, though the overall plan was reduced in size and scale. The City of Manchester stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, football, rugby and athletics during the games. In 2003 the stadium was handed over to Manchester City football club and has since been the venue for almost all Manchester City home games. Other venues at the site include the National Squash Centre, Manchester Velodrome and Manchester Regional Arena, all of which were built specifically for the Commonwealth Games. The newest addition to the site is Co-op Live, a multipurpose arena with a capacity of 23,500, the largest in Europe. The arena cost nearly £400 million to build and opened after much controversy in May 2024. Also, the City of Manchester Stadium is being extended to include a new stand and 'Skybar' at a cost of £300 million. Renovations are expected to be complete in 2026, just in time for Euro 2028 which will be hosted here in the UK and Ireland.
