In this video, we’re going to graph the cosine function, i.e. y = cos(x). The cosine function is a periodic function. It has a period of 2π radians. This means that cos(x + 2π) = cos(x). The cosine function is an even function, meaning it’s symmetric about the y-axis. More specifically, cos(-x) = cos(x). The graph of the cosine function starts at its highest point (0, 1), drops smoothly, intersects the x-axis at π/2 radians, continues to drop smoothly, reaches its trough at π radians, rises smoothly, intersects the x-axis again at 3π/2 radians, continues to rise smoothly, and reaches its peak again at 2π radians. This pattern of the graph repeats every 2π radians along the x-axis.

The graph of the cosine function is identical in shape to the graph of the sine function, but it’s shifted to the left by π/2 radians. Because of their cyclic nature, the sine function and the cosine function have been instrumental in understanding periodic physical phenomena, such as sound and light waves, and the movement of pendulums and springs.
