The Mark 23 from Heckler and Koch is one of the brightest stars on the screen and is without a doubt a legend. But when Special Operations Command put out the request for it, they let everyone and their dog make a list of requirements for the contract. Colt and H&K both submitted pistols for the Offensive Handgun Weapons System program. Colt's offering was sorely lacking but Colt was busy with their once every decade or so bankruptcy. Heckler and Koch won the contract and the MK23 Mod 0 was accepted. The firearms community ran wild with it. It was on the front of every magazine and book. When Hideo Kojima released his masterpiece and before Konami was screwing everything up, the MK23 was front and center on Shadow Moses Island in Metal Gear Solid where Solid Snake faced off against Revolver Ocelot, Sniper Wolf and his brother Liquid Snake. Gamers with any clout at all would all come to know the MK23 and pine after it's civilian counterpart, the Mark 23. Tears of the Sun made the MK23 a star of the cinema and then dozens of more movies would only cement this, even it the anime and B movie appearances got more cringe with each release. The Mark 23 was a hit on the commercial market with collectors and video game fans, yet in military service the special operations users like Seals, Delta Force and Force Recon/Marsoc/Raiders all seemed to scoff at the MK23's size and weight even though they all readily admired it reliability and accuracy. Even when deployed in Iraq I personally was surprised to see the MK23 in arms rooms but never outside the wire. While some think the USP series was developed from the MK23, the USP was actially the forerunner and now that H & K has developed systems like the P30, HK45 and VP9, the lessons learned have proven out evolution from the revolution of the USP and the MK23. The Mk23 has a magic to it that will never fade and the love for it will never die either.
