EASY instructions on how to use Google Maps with a Garmin Zumo396.

open Google MY MAPS. use your Gmail account to open it.
in MY google maps.
create a new map(or use one you already have).

I made a start point and an end point. you can make a full round trip or it can be a one way.

create you route.

check your map. make sure it goes the route you want and there are no missteps. google maps has a mind of it's own sometimes(lol).

once you are happy with your map choice...name the map and the directions if you wish.

now export the map in a .KML file. it should be in you downloads folder.

close google maps if you like.

open BaseCamp

make sure you have Garmin Express installed on your computer. connect your Garmin to your computer.

click on My Collection, then open file on the menu(top left) click on Import into MY Collection.

import your map(whatever you named it).
click on your imported map.(upper window)

make sure you are in DIRECT mode,,, NOT motorcycle. Top tool bar.

in the window called My Collection(lower window) you should see a file with your map(2 foot print icon).
double click on the track for your map(two foot print icon).
again make sure you are in DIRECT MODE,, this is important.

change the color if you like. click on make route.

set number of points(Zumo 396 has a max of 39 points per route). the Zumo will split your route into separate routes if you have too many points. do NOT use automatic number of points.

check your route for any screw ups. don't worry about the route lines not following the roads.
use 'ALT' key + mouse to move your point(s)as needed.

make sure your points are on the road, if it is a divided road, make sure the point is on the correct side for the direction you are traveling.

once you have the route the way you like it. change color(optional) and change it to 'MOTORCYCLE' or 'car'. the route should now follow the ROADS.

double check your route. fix any issues.
if the route is NOT as you want, hover the mouse over the route where you want to correct it. hold the 'ALT' key and click on the route in the area you wish to change, then drag the mouse to where you want the route.

I found that if I use CAR instead of MOTORCYCLE the route stays more on the main roads.

the only thing left after you double check your route, is to export the route to the Garmin Zumo 396.
simply click the green and blue icon on the tool bar that says import to device.
once it's installed, unplug your Garmin, turn it on, and agree to upload the NEW files.
(I did not have my Garmin connected for this video.)

go to PLAN TRIP and choose your map route trip from the list of saved trips.
