Starting home therapy without a therapist is always a challenge. Keeping up with a speech and language delayed child is already very difficult, to start teaching and acting as a therapist at home creates chaos in both you and your child’s lives.

So this is a video series about how to do speech therapy at home. It’s a simple series to get you up to speed with quick wins so that you feel it actually can be done! We recommend starting off with 5-10 minutes a day in the beginning.

In this video, we’ll be talking about what you need at home to succeed. Because I’m a big fan of sitting down and playing. I would strongly recommend a play mat for children below 2 and 9 months and a children’s table for any children above that.

The reason why children work better on the floor when they’re young is that it’s actually quite tiring sitting with their legs dangling. So make sure their feet can touch the floor if you’re using a chair. An alternative is to use a high chair (which saves yourself from back pain) or using a yoga block as a footstool.

Now that your child sits nicely, you will need some things to engage your child with. Frankly speaking, playing with your child is a skill you have to learn. I started off very bad and nearly didn’t make probation in the first week as a junior ABA therapist.

So that’s why you don’t have to start using toys yet. It’s stressful when you don't know what to do. We recommend you start by using snacks and bubbles. Don’t worry, we’re only using it for 5-10 minutes a day in the beginning. A lot of parents report back to us saying that their kids don’t want bubbles and snacks anymore, and that’s because they used it far too often!

We also recommend getting a transparent plastic jar that your child cannot open. You can put your snacks all inside and they will have to communicate in order to get the snacks inside. We’ll talk about how to use it in the next video.

Lastly, bubbles and balls go a long way for children between 2-6 years old. Stock up on bubble juice and different kinds of balls, bouncy, squishy, small and big.

This series is designed to start home therapy stress-free. In the coming videos, we will be teaching you how to interact with your child in those short 10 minutes. For all the toys that we recommend to parents head to www.agentsofspeech.com/checklist.
