Kerala boasts near 100% literacy, a result of centuries of educational initiatives, from 14th-century schools to royal decrees, missionary efforts, and movements like P. N. Panicker's library revolution. It was officially declared India's first fully literate state in 1991.

However, India's literacy definition – merely being able to sign your name – falls short. Unlike the functional literacy standards in developed nations, this narrow view masks a critical gap. Despite high official literacy, Kerala faces significant challenges: it records one of India's highest crime rates and an alarming 28.7% youth unemployment rate (vs. national average 10.2%). This forces many Keralites to seek work in Gulf countries, highlighting a disconnect between reported literacy and practical skills.

This video questions if Kerala's high literacy is merely nominal. We explore India's literacy measurement, Kerala's journey to near 100%, and the critical question: Is Kerala truly 100% literate in a meaningful sense? We argue for a shift towards functional literacy and skill-based education to truly empower its population and tackle these pressing issues.
