The History of Christmas Island | Crabs, Tropical Diseases, and Mutiny

In this episode of Ghost Geography, we look into the history behind one of Australia's seven external territories: Christmas Island. But, how did this remote island located roughly 220 miles (350 kilometers) south of Indonesia come to be a part of Australia, which sits some 960 miles (1,550 kilometers) to its southeast? To answer that question, we have to explore the island's history, starting with early visitations by Europeans in the 17th century. Of these, the expeditions of William Mynors and William Dampier stand out in particular. In time, exploration led to annexation by Britain in 1888 and the island remained there until WWII, which brought with it Japanese occupation.
