জার্মানির লোয়ার স্যাক্সনির হ্যামেলিন শহর, সময়টা ছিল ঠিক ১২৮৪ সাল। হ্যামেলিন শহর তখন ইদুঁরের প্রোকোপের স্বীকার। কোথা থেকে যেন হাজির হলো এক বাঁশীওয়ালা, তার গায়ে ছিল হরেক রঙের পোষাক। সে এক উপায় বাতলে দিল হ্যামেলিনের মেয়রের কাছে। মেয়র মলডিন বললেন ঠিক আছে, ইঁদুর তাড়িয়ে দাও, তার বদলে তোমাকে আমি এক হাজার স্বর্ন মুদ্রা দেব। আর সেই কথায় বাঁশিওয়ালাও রাজি হয়ে গেল। বাঁশিওয়ালা এবার ইঁদুর বাহিনীকে সায়াস্তা করতে বাঁশি বাজানো শুরু করল এবং বিশাল ইঁদুরের দল বাঁশির সুরে সব ইঁদুর গুলো এসে তলিয়ে গেল শহরের শেষে ওয়েসার নদীর জলে। কেবল একটি ইদুঁরই কিভাবে যেন বেঁচে গেল। বাঁশিওয়ালা ফিরে এল রাজার কাছে, এবং তার প্রাপ্য স্বর্ণ মুদ্রা চাইল। কিন্তু মেয়র তাকে স্বর্ণ মুদ্রা দিতে আস্বিকার করে, মাত্র পঞ্চাশটি স্বর্ণ মুদ্রা দেয়। সঙ্গে এও বলেন মেয়র বাঁশিওয়ালা তো নিজেই ইঁদুরগুলো শহরে নিয়ে এসেছিল, যাতে সেগুলোকে তাড়িয়ে টাকা রোজগার করতে পারে। এই কথায় বাঁশিওয়ালা ভীষণ রেগে মেগে চলে যায় এবং যাওয়ার আগে এও বলে যায় এর প্রতিশোধ ঠিক একদিন সে নেবে।
১২৮৪ সালে জুনের ২৬ তারিখে শহরে সেদিন ছুটি ছিল। রোমেজন ও পলের শহীদ স্বরনে জন এবং পল দিবস পালন করা হয় এই দিন। সবাই ছিল চার্চে, সময়টা সকাল সাতটা। হঠাৎ ফিরে এল বাঁশিওয়ালা। কিন্তু এবার আর রঙচঙে পোশাক নয়, এবার একরঙা সবুজ শিকারির বেশে। বাজাতে শুরু করল সে তার মায়াবি বাঁশি, আর বাঁসির সুরে বেরিয়ে এল শহরের অগনিত শিশুরা। গুনে গুনে ১৩০ জন শিশু, মেয়রের মেয়েও ছিল সেখানে।
