One Hundred Years of Solitude is a Colombian Spanish language magical realism web series based on the 1967 multigenerational epic novel of the same name by Gabriel García Márquez. It won the Colombian author the Nobel Prize in literature in 1982 and is widely praised as one of the most influential works of the 20th century. The series will run for sixteen episodes on Netflix, with the first eight released on December 11, 2024. Written by José Rivera, Natalia Santa, Camila Brugés, Albatrós González and María Camila Arias. Directed by Alex García López and Laura Mora.
Cousins José Arcadio Buendía played by Diego Vasquez and Marco Antonio González Ospina and Úrsula Iguarán played by Marleyda Soto and Susana Morales Cañas are married against their family's wishes. Úrsula initially refuses to consummate the marriage, fearing that their children will be born with birth defects as her mother warned. After José Arcadio Buendia kills Prudencio in a duel, he and Úrsula are haunted by Prudencio's ghost, forcing them to leave town. As José Arcadio Buendia, Úrsula, and several of their friends trek through the wilderness, Úrsula goes into labor and delivers a baby boy named José Arcadio. They eventually establish the small village of Macondo, where they are visited by Melquíades played by Moreno Borja and his band of Gypsies. With Melquíades's inventions, José Arcadio Buendia immersing himself into science and exploration, while Úrsula gives birth to a second son, Aureliano. Lush green Macondo filled with love, sex, relationships, mystery, war and disappointment. Macondo is a deep and rich setting, gorgeous to explore. The costumes, the sets and the special effects are delightful to watch. This series is lyrical, alive and brimming with visual and intellectual ideas, detailed and layered. The series was filmed entirely in Colombia. Later we see a vicious and bloody depiction of Colombia’s Thousand Days War, which pitted conservatives and liberals against one another. The rain of yellow flowers announcing the death of José Arcadio Buendia, and the trickle of blood impossibly snaking all the way across town to Úrsula’s feet to tell her that her son is dead are startlingly beautiful. Director Laura Mora said in one interview As a filmmaker, as a Colombian, it has been an honour and an enormous challenge to work on a project of the complexity and responsibility of One Hundred Years of Solitude, always trying to understand the difference between literary and audiovisual language, to be able to construct images that contain something of the beauty, poetry and depth of a work that has impacted the entire world. We have done it with love and respect for the novel, with the help of an exceptional technical and human team. Enjoy the series.
