MRF was founded in 1946 by K. M. Mammen Mappillai, who began with a modest toy-balloon unit in a shed in Tiruvottiyur, Madras (now Chennai). Starting with an initial investment of just ₹14,000 (around ₹1.4 lakh), he and his wife expanded into latex toys, gloves, and contraceptives by 1949. In 1952, MRF ventured into tread-rubber manufacturing and by 1956 had captured half the Indian market. The company went public in 1961, partnered with Mansfield Tire & Rubber, and launched its first tyre, with Nehru inaugurating its research facility in 1963. MRF became the first Indian firm to export tyres to the U.S. in 1967.

Today, MRF is India’s largest tyre manufacturer—making tyres, tubes, conveyor belts, paints, and toys—with over ₹3 billion in annual revenue and a market valuation of over ₹5 lakh crore.
