Short clip of special Puja (the act of showing reverence to a God) performed at a temple of Goddess Harati Maa in Swayambhu, in my last trip back home. This puja is performed by Buddhist priest according to Vajrayana tradition. The whole clip was taken from iPhone 6s by my brother, Roshan Maharjan.

Who is Harati Maa ?
Anyone who visits Swayambhu in Kathmandu, won’t miss the glorious Harati Temple, situated on the northwestern side of the Swayambhu Chaitya. She sits inside a two-tiered pagoda-style temple. Goddess Harati, the most powerful among all the Yakshyas (demons). The demoness Harati possess tremendous miraculous power and divine strength, far outstripping any of the 1000 Yakshyas in her family. Now, it is a long and interesting story, how we started worshipping such demons, as Ajima. (Will save that story for some other time). She is also known as Harati Maa or Ajima among the Newars of Kathmandu Valley. The word ‘Ajima’, literally means Mother of Mother. Ajima, is the protector of Shree Swayambhu Mahachaitya. She can bestow power to her devotees, counteract evil omens, exerts control over evil and can also punish who desecrate Swayambhu Mahachaitya. She is known to have over thousands of sons and daughters. Only five of those children are usually portrayed in her Temple; they are considered to represent all the children. They are as follows:
1. Dhana Bhaju: Carried on the back
2. Dhana Mayaju: Carried in her arm
3. Wasiin Bhaju: Snuggled on the right lap
4. Wassin Mayju: Sunggled on the left lap
5. Jilan Bhaju: Placed on the ground next to the lap
Mother Harati serves as a chief protector of Swayambhu Maha Chaitya. She is also regarded as the protector of Children as well. She visits different places and takes care of children under twelve years of age. Local people of Kathmandu Valley have deep faith in her. This is proved by the growing pride of spirit-mediums in the present day. In Kathmandu valley today, there are numerous healers locally called Maa. They are considered the very embodiment of the deity Harati. They they are possessed by Harati or sometime by one of her give children. These Maa, can perform healing, make astrological predictions, subdue evil omens occurring in the household and alleviate the social problems.
