Legacy, Lives and Landscape: The tales of Nusantara

Building a new capital city in the middle of rainforests of East Kalimantan will be Jokowi’s largest legacy when his tenure ends next year. The new state palace, in the form of the state symbol Garuda Pancasila, has started to take shape on top of the hill, surrounded by other buildings and facilities supporting the future city.

Some rejoiced with the arrival of Nusantara, which is hailed as the beacon of national economic development. They greet the construction of the new city by opening new sources of livelihoods, such as restaurants and guest houses.

But the indigenous Balik community, which lives not far from the new city construction site, sits anxiously as its traditional way of life is threatened.

Our documentary captures the hopes for a legacy and new economic opportunity and also the concerns from local communities brought by Indonesia’s new capital city of Nusantara.
