A colostomy and ileostomy are surgical procedures that involve creating an opening (stoma) on the abdomen to allow waste to exit the body when the natural pathway is impaired.

A colostomy is when part of the colon (large intestine) is diverted to the abdominal wall, often due to colon cancer, diverticulitis, or injury. It allows stool to bypass the damaged area and exit through the stoma into a colostomy bag.

Ileostomy is similar but involves diverting the small intestine (ileum) to the abdominal wall. This is often done for conditions like Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or bowel cancer. Waste is more liquid compared to a colostomy.

Both procedures can be temporary or permanent, depending on the patient's condition, and they help manage bowel function when normal digestion is not possible.
