Scientists from the Technical University of Munich are exploring how to use local lunar materials to build algae-based photobioreactors (PBRs) that can produce oxygen and food for astronauts. These systems use algae to convert carbon dioxide and water into breathable air and edible biomass, offering a sustainable alternative to costly Earth shipments.

The study compared two reactor designs and found that building them from lunar resources could save millions—up to $50 million per unit. Key challenges include creating protective housing from Moon materials, producing clear glass, and sourcing critical elements like carbon and nitrogen.

A hybrid approach combining traditional oxygen extraction with PBRs is recommended. While not ready yet, these systems are expected to support future lunar missions by turning the Moon's harsh environment into a livable outpost.
