This live lesson encourages young people to explore the complex relationships between plants, animals and their environment as together we delve beneath the surface of a pond, marvel at the amazing adaptations that allow them to compete and survive in their underwater world.

FSC’s expert field tutor will answer questions about ponds and the plants and animals found there.

Teachers can submit questions and shout-outs in advance after registering their class for the live lesson.

Lesson Outline
1. Introduction (5 mins)
We will open the session with a welcome and brief introduction to the relationships in ecosystem exploration.

2. Subject knowledge (5 minutes)
The Tutor will then introduce the site, the different microhabitats present within the pond and consider the environmental conditions in each of these microhabitats.

3. Activity Time (20 minutes)
The Tutor will lead a live pond dip before introducing two key species found. Pupils can work alongside using the keys to identify the species and uncover their key features and adaptations to live in a freshwater environment.

Together you can consider how freshwater organisms can be classified before pupils create their own labelled scientific drawing of one of the species found.

At this point, questions can be submitted via the Live chat.

4. Q&A and Conclusions (15 minutes)
After completing the activity we will be able to answer pre-submitted questions and take part in the live chat. At the end of the broadcast the tutor will suggest some other activities that you may like to try to continue to explore your local green space and what’s coming up in #fieldworklive 2020.
