DNA: Free radicals

Описание к видео DNA: Free radicals

Free radicals are molecules that contain one or more unpaired electrons in their outermost orbit. This makes them highly reactive and able to interact with other molecules in the body, including DNA. Free radicals can be produced naturally as a byproduct of normal cellular metabolism, such as during energy production in mitochondria. However, exposure to external factors, such as ultraviolet radiation, air pollution, cigarette smoke, and certain chemicals, can also generate them.
