Jamal Galves’ conservation journey started when he was only 11 years old and encountered a team of researchers in his home village of Gales Point Manatee. This catapulted him to dedicating his life to conserving the Antillean manatee. Researcher and rescuer, Jamal has fondly become known as Belize’s Manatee Man. With only 1000 Antillean manatees left in Belizean waters, Jamal is fighting to save them from extinction by researching manatees, educating locals, and working with local government bodies to implement no wake zones for manatees. Slow and gentle creatures, the manatee population is mostly affected by loss of habitat and collisions with boats. Tagging and tracking wild manatees and rescuing and rehabilitating injured manatees helps researchers like Jamal understand their behavior so more appropriate measures can be taken to protect them.
