In March1944, the Soviets launched the Polesskoe Offensive, a massive strike aimed at the vulnerable junction between Germany's Army Group South, and Army Group Center.

Their objective was clear: punch deep into the German rear and sever the crucial supply and communication lines. The Red Army tore through the German defenses, driving them relentlessly back toward the Polish town of Kovel, a fortress city the Germans could not afford to lose.

By March 18, 1944, Kovel was encircled, its garrison cut off and facing annihilation. Recognizing the grave threat to the rear of Army Group Center, the German High Command scrambled to respond. Over the next few weeks, they poured reinforcements into the region—nine divisions, including two panzer divisions, one heavy panzer battalion and two assault gun brigades—all to defend this vital sector.

Among these reinforcements was a Kampfgruppe from the elite 5th SS-Panzer-Division Wiking, commanded by SS-Obersturmführer Kahl Nicolussi-Leck.

With 17 Panther tanks, a Bergepanther recovery vehicle and an infantry battalion from SS-Panzergrenadier Regiment Germania, they set out on a daring mission to break the Soviet siege and save Kovel from falling into enemy hands.

The race against time had begun.
